Case studies
Levels of difficulty
The case studies will be developed on this blog will concern the fields mentioned above. They allow the reader to perform the same tests alone. These tests will be classified into four levels according to difficulty:
Level 1 - Basic
Requires a minimum of practice in handling tools and / or computer.
Level 2 - Technician
Requires a good practice in the use of equipment, machine tools, computers, minimal background in mathematics and physics, graduating from technical school industrial or professional.
Level 3 - Advanced
Requires a good practice in the use of equipment, machine tools, computers, software, computer aided solutions, good knowledge of mathematics and physics, engineering degree or attendance of the last years of the degree course in Engineering.
Level 4 - Pro
Requires a large capacity in handling search tools, open-mindedness, ability to complete what you start, the more varied knowledge of laboratory, analysis, simulation, good knowledge of mathematics and physics, good practice to use equipment, machine tools, computers, software, computer aided solutions.
Case studies
eBike: test of a prototype Ralph DTE Motorsport EBK Endurance (001)
Level 3 - Advanced
This case study analyzes the key problems of the transformation of a traditional bicycle in an electric bicycle and aims to test the best compromise between ease of transformation, rational management of the masses added (in order not to penalize the handling), autonomy, performance, low running costs, depreciation of the expenditure, choice of reliable components, choice of cells most suitable, choice of electronics most suitable, choice of management systems, etc.. Using sophisticated equipment during the test will be recognized all the data necessary to write a short but complete technical manual.
Biogas power generator: study of technical issues (2013)
Level 3 - Advanced
Study of the technical issues related to the use of natural gas and biogas as fuel to power a generator. Evaluation of the production processes of the biogas, contaminants harmful to the organs of an internal combustion engine and of the products obtained from the combustion of biogas.
Study of the useful life of a car along a distance of 500,000 km (1999 - ….)
Level 3 - Advanced
Study of wear of the entire components of a motor vehicle with an internal combustion engine, diesel cycle, direct injection, turbocharged 2-liter, 16-valve, with low specific power, over a distance of 500,000 km (or more). Analysis of factors which affect the useful life of all components and analysis of the costs incurred.
Note: The test is carried out with a vehicle that has from the beginning a good quality grade of: engine, chassis, body, systems, assembly and project. The test is repeated with the same results only with vehicles of equal or higher quality.
Study of the useful life of Li-Ion batteries over a period of 8 years (2014-2021)
Level 3 - Advanced
Analysis of variations in the physical characteristics of individual cells forming a lithium polymer battery pack designed for the traction of a small prototype. The battery pack 36V-50Ah is formed from 250 cells divided into 10 elements in series, each of which connected to 25 elements in parallel. Verification of the life cycle cells, the capacity changes, changes in behavior in the charge/discharge and possibilities of intervention in order to maintain high levels of capacity over time and to understand the best design choices. Assistance to the charge/discharge, protection and control managed by BMS with passive balancing and dedicated datalogging system.
Study of the useful life of a Li-Ion High Performance battery pack
Level 3 - Advanced
Analysis of variations in the physical characteristics of individual cells forming a lithium polymer battery pack designed for the traction of a small prototype. The battery pack, currently in the planning stage, will be subjected to substantial shocks repeated for the number of cycles as high as possible. Study and verification of the useful strategies and the techniques to improve performance, reliability and durability.
